Hazardous Waste Disposal

The Door-to-Door (or home) HHW collection service is available to all residents of Solana Beach for a small co-payment of $10.00, as the City subsidizes the disposal cost. To schedule an appointment, please call (877) 443-2371. This service is also offered at no charge to qualifying homebound or senior residents aged 65 and over. For a list of eligible items, including e-waste and household batteries, please visit the City of Solana Beach Hazardous Waste page.

In addition to the Door-to-Door collection service, there are two regional permanent collection facilities open every Saturday (excluding holiday weekends) from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Residents can drop off their HHW at these facilities free of charge, as the City subsidizes the disposal cost.

The Vista facility is located at 1145 East Taylor Street, at Laguna Lane, while the Poway facility can be found in the South Poway Business Park at

12325 Crosthwaite Circle, at Stowe Drive.

Alternative Recycling Choices

For hard-to-recycle items, here are some suggestions:

Solana Center

Did you know that California state law prohibits the disposal of light bulbs containing mercury, such as compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), in the trash? Instead, you can bring them to the Solana Center, located at 137 N. El Camino Real in Encinitas (behind the Sheriff's station). Be sure to check their website for hours. They also accept LED bulbs, e-waste, and batteries.

Additionally, the Solana Center offers rain barrels (with rebates available) and compost bins/accessories for sale, as well as a Garden Tool Lending Library featuring various gardening and carpentry tools. If you're interested in learning more about Green Living, they provide workshops on topics like composting and water harvesting.

Visit the EDCO Recycling Page to see their recycling guidelines, or find out what to do with large items that will not fit in the blue bin. You can also schedule a bulky item pickup.

Safe.pharmacy drug disposal

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department and the County Board of Supervisors have established a drop-off collection program for unwanted, unused, or expired prescription drugs. These items pose significant risks to our community, either by falling into the wrong hands or harming the environment through improper disposal. Secure collection drop boxes have been installed at several Sheriff's facilities, including the Encinitas Station located at

175 North El Camino Real, Encinitas, CA 92024

Community members are welcome to visit any of the facilities to turn in unwanted medications anonymously. For additional drop-off locations, visit the website safe.pharmacy, which can also let you know if your local CVS pharmacy has a drop-off box available.
